10 Dental Tips That Will Lead to a Winning Smile!

10 Dental Tips That Will Lead to a Winning Smile!

Best Dental Tips

One of the biggest turn-offs for people are bad breath, yellow teeth, or an appearance that you don’t care about the quality of your smile. Keeping your teeth and gums in check isn’t just about looking good, however, it’s about maintaining a healthy smile. Taking care of your mouth, teeth, and gums might not be rocket science, but there is a science to it! If you want a winning smile to win people over, follow these quick and easy dental tips.

1. Brush Like You Mean It, But Not Until it Hurts!

Brushing your teeth is non-negotiable, but how you do it matters just as much as doing it. A general rule to live by is to brush twice a day for two minutes each. Also, make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste, and although you want to be thorough, you don’t want to be too harsh. For healthy teeth and gums, gentle and circular motions are the best way to go.

2. Flossing: The Underrated Hero

With so many things on your already busy to-do list, flossing might seem like an unnecessary addition. When you skip it, however, you might leave behind food bits and plaque that can lead to cavities and gum disease. Make sure to floss once a day, and make sure you’re getting between every tooth. The extra time it takes will make all the difference in your long-term dental health.

3. Rinse Right

Although most people assume mouthwash is just a breath refresher, it actually helps get rid of bacteria and it helps to strengthen your enamel. Not all mouthwashes, however, are equal. Choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride and doesn’t contain alcohol, for the best results. Swish a capful of mouthwash around your mouth for about 30 seconds, spit it out, and enjoy that minty-fresh feeling.

4. Watch What You Eat and Drink!

Sugary snacks and acidic drinks like soda, fruit juices, and sports drinks are basically an all-you-can-eat buffet for bacteria in your mouth. When possible, limit them. If you must partake, make sure to rinse your mouth with water after gulping them. The good news is that crunchy fruits and veggies like apples and carrots actually help clean your teeth naturally. So let nature’s sugar treat you right.

5. Stay Hydrated

Water is a magic makeover for your mouth. It helps to wash away leftover food, keeps your saliva flowing to fight bacteria, and works to prevent dry mouth. Plus, if you’re drinking tap water, there’s a good chance it has fluoride. Science tells us that fluoride helps strengthen your teeth, so it’s a win-win daily practice.

6. Replace That Toothbrush Frequently

Your toothbrush was not meant to see you through the ages. Dentists recommend swapping it out every three to four months—or sooner if the bristles look worn. A fresh toothbrush cleans way better than an old, sad one. Also, it just feels better to brush with a new, clean one!

7. Don’t Ignore Your Gums

Healthy gums are just as important as healthy teeth. If you notice bleeding, swelling, or tenderness when you brush or floss, it might be time to check in with the dentist. Gingivitis is an early-stage gum disease. If you catch and address it early, it’s totally reversible.

8. Visit Your Dentist, They Love to See You

Not many people look forward to taking a seat in the dental chair, but six-month checkups can help to save you a ton of pain and money, over time. A dentist can spot problems before they get serious and can also make your teeth shine like new.

9. Kick Bad Habits

Smoking and chewing tobacco are pretty much the worst things you can do for your teeth, body, and health. Bad habits can lead to staining, cause bad breath, and increase your risk of gum disease and oral cancer. If you need another reason to quit, yellow and stained teeth are not highly attractive to others.

10. Teeth are not Tools!

Who hasn’t looked around for a tool and decided what the heck and opening packages with their teeth? That’s never a good idea. Using your teeth for anything other than chewing food can lead to chips, cracks, or even a broken tooth. The best way to keep them safe is to go the extra mile to find a tool that was actually meant for the job.

Taking care of your teeth doesn’t have to be punishing. If you stick to these dental tips, you’ll be more attractive, avoid dental cavities and problems, and save yourself heartache and money. Just a few minutes a day will keep the dentist chair away, or at least the drill. Contact our office today to schedule your next checkup, and walk away with a winning smile!
