Let Summer Vacation Begin With These Essential Dental Tips for Healthy Teeth

Summertime is upon us and for most families, that means one thing – vacation! If you are going to be setting out on a summertime trip, make sure you pack all of the essentials. While on the go, don’t sacrifice your dental health, make sure to plan and pack all you need. Whether you are off on a weekend getaway or globe-trotting, maintaining good oral care is a must and just as important as carrying your passport. Skipping just a few days of good dental habits can lead to plaque buildup, gum issues, and even tooth decay. These are tips to maintain your dental health all summer long!

Pack a Travel-Sized Dental Kit

It isn’t enough to just pack your toothbrush to go. Your daily dental routine can’t take a vacation just because you have. The best way to maintain your dental health throughout your summer travels is to be ready. Pack a toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash in a travel-sized kit to save space and be flight-ready. Also, keep your brush clean and dry using a travel case, especially if you’re on the move frequently or staying in shared spaces.

Stay On-Schedule

When your summer days are long and filled with activities and sites to see, it is easy to forget your regular dental routine. Set a reminder on your phone to brush and floss at least twice a day, just as you would at home. If you are in transit or camping, brushing with bottled water is the best way to go. It will ensure that the water you are using is available, clean, and healthy for your teeth and body.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum

There are times when brushing might not be practical after meals. Sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva production and rinse away food particles and bacteria in place of brushing. When buying gum, look for those that contain xylitol, which is a natural sweetener that actually helps to fight tooth decay. It might not be a substitute for brushing and flossing, but it can be a great back up plan when you are in a position where brushing isn’t possible.

Mind What You Eat and Drink

Sometimes on vacation we throw caution to the wind and allow our dietary habits to take a backseat. It might be a time to indulge but try to be mindful of sugary treats, sticky candies, and acidic drinks like soda or citrus juices. Sugary foods can erode and feed cavity-causing bacteria if left unchecked. If you do indulge, make sure to rinse your mouth with water afterward and brush as soon as you can. Also, don’t forget to stay hydrated! Keeping your mouth moist is important when you are on the go.

Be Cautious with Water Quality

There are some areas that people travel where the tap water might not be safe to drink. If it isn’t safe to drink, it isn’t safe to use to brush. Use bottled water for brushing your teeth because ingesting contaminated water can cause illness and disrupt your trip, not to mention your oral health.

Store Your Brush Safely

A damp toothbrush in a closed bag is not the best way to travel. Damp brushes tend to be a breeding ground for bacteria. When possible, let your brush air dry and avoid storing it in an airtight container for extended periods. If you are moving around a lot, consider bringing a couple of extra toothbrushes just in case one gets dirty or misplaced.

Get Your Checkup Before You Go

Coming home and unpacking from vacation is never fun, especially if there are things that you could’ve taken care of before you left. If you are planning an extended trip or going somewhere remote, it is a good idea to schedule a dental checkup before you leave. A quick visit and exam can catch potential issues so that they don’t turn into travel nightmares.

Know Where to Get Help Abroad

If you are traveling out of the country, do your research. It is a good idea to research dental clinics and a different dental system at your intended destination. Keep your dental insurance information handy and know what is covered and what isn’t. A little preparation goes a long way when you are traveling across borders.

Travel Smart, Smile Bright

You might be taking a summer vacation, but your oral care shouldn’t. If you plan accordingly, then you can maintain good oral health on the go. Where this summer does take you, we wish you happy memories and healthy smiles.
